Video File Size & Bitrate

The size of a video file is primarily determined by its bitrate — the amount of video data encoded per second, measured in Mbps. Higher bitrates preserve more visual detail but consume more storage and bandwidth. Resolution and frame rate influence the required bitrate but do not directly determine file size once the bitrate is set.

The File Size Formula

File Size (bytes) = (Bitrate in bps × Duration in seconds) / 8

Recommended Bitrates

For 1080p at 30fps, YouTube recommends a bitrate of 8 Mbps. For 4K at 60fps, a bitrate of 51–68 Mbps is recommended. Modern codecs like H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 can achieve similar quality to H.264 at roughly half the bitrate, significantly reducing storage requirements.
