Bandwidth & Network Transfer Speed

Bandwidth refers to the maximum rate at which data can be transferred over a network connection, typically measured in Megabits per second (Mbps) or Gigabits per second (Gbps). It's important to note that ISPs advertise bandwidth in bits, while file sizes are measured in bytes (1 Byte = 8 bits), which is why real-world downloads are often slower than the headline speed suggests.

The Transfer Formula

Transfer Time (seconds) = (File Size in Bits) / (Connection Speed in bps)

Note: Always convert file size from bytes to bits by multiplying by 8.

Why Real Speeds Are Slower

Real-world download speeds are typically 70–80% of your advertised bandwidth maximum due to network overhead, protocol headers, server limitations, and Wi-Fi signal strength. For large file transfers, always budget extra time above the theoretical minimum.
