Unix Timestamp & Epoch Time

The Unix epoch is a timekeeping standard used by all POSIX-compliant operating systems. It represents time as the total number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC (also known as the Unix epoch or the Unix origin). It is negative for dates before 1970 and positive for all subsequent dates.

Why Do Developers Use Unix Timestamps?

Unix timestamps are entirely timezone-independent, timezone-stable integers. They're trivial to compare, sort, and perform arithmetic on. Calculating the difference between two timestamps is simply a subtraction — no calendar math required. They are stored in databases, APIs, and log files universally across languages and systems.

Seconds vs. Milliseconds

Some environments (particularly JavaScript on the web) work with epoch time in milliseconds (multiply by 1,000) rather than seconds. Our converter handles both formats automatically.
